Team Talk: Aland Islands

The Aland Islands football team is the official football team for the Aland Islands in Finland. They are controlled by AlandsFotbollforbund, which is the governing body on the Aland Islands.

They are not affiliated with either FIFA or UEFA.

The team mainly competes within the Island Games Competitions with Aland hosting the competition in 1991 and 2009. The team won a Silver medal in 2009 and Bronze medal in 1989 and 1993. They also reached fourth place in 1991 and 2011.

Aland also has a successful football team called IFK Mariehamn who are based in Mariehamn, the captial of the Aland Islands. It currently plays in the Finnish Premier Division (Veikkausliiga). The club’s manager is Pekka Lyyski, and it plays its home matches at Wiklöf Holding Arena.

They finished fourth in the 2013 season

Their first International match was in July 1985 against Sapmi, a match that they won 4-2. Their biggest win came on the 14th June 1986 against Bornholm, a match that they won 6-2. Their biggest defeat was to the Faroe Islands on the 12th July 1989, going down 7-1. Ouch!
